Objectives:
|
The objectives of this project are to survey reef habitat for tires, record tire locations, and remove suitable stony coral colonies from tires comprising the Osborne Tire Reef in Broward County. The project team will survey individual grid cells and remove corals from tires. The project team will provide locations of the tires and notify Department of Environmental Protection regularly in its deliverables the grid cells that have been surveyed and cleared of suitable coral colonies. Tire removal is not proposed in this scope of work. It is anticipated that one or more tire removal contractors will be obtained through a competitive procurement process and tire locations may be shared those contractor(s). The project team will work with Department of Environmental Protection to identify areas for stony coral relocation with Broward County. Candidate sites for restoration include those that have suffered significant impacts from vessel, anchor, and/or anchor-chain damage identified by Department of Environmental Protection¿s Reef Injury Prevention and Response Program. While the preferred outcome is for corals to be relocated to reef, corals removed from tires may be donated rather than outplanted. The project team will coordinate with Department of Environmental Protection before colonies are donated to restoration/propagation partners. Colonies will only be donated if a proposal for the use of the corals is submitted to and approved by Department on Environmental Protection.
