Objectives:

In 2022, the Florida Legislature created the Charter School Review Commission to review and approve applications for charter schools overseen by school districts. Pursuant to section 1002.3301, F.S., the commission shall consist of seven members who have charter school experience, selected by the State Board of Education and subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The commission has the same powers and duties as sponsors pursuant to section 1002.33, F.S., in regard to reviewing and approving charter schools. The legislature mandated that the Florida Department of Education select a college or university to provide administrative and technical assistance to the commission by reviewing and providing an analysis of charter school applications submitted to the commission. In 2025, the legislature approved an appropriation for this purpose.
